May 2024 Hunt Tests

End time is a guess - tests for each day conclude when all of the dogs have ran and depending on how things go, it may be much earlier or later.

Our first hunt tests of 2024 are coming up on May 17th - 19th and will be held at George DeCosta's Gundog Ranch in New Plymouth (we'll also be using some of the Mitchell's fields next door, but we will be based at the Gundog Ranch). Here is the link to the turnoff in Google maps:
Gundog Ranch

If you are willing to volunteer at the test with various tasks such as planting and wrangling birds, being a blank gunner, and other similar tasks, please reach out to our Test Director, Sherman Murray, and he'll get you squared away.
Email: shermanm1972@gmail.com
Phone: 541-212-3402
All volunteers at our tests need to be members of NAVHDA International for insurance and liability purposes.

If you wish to come out to watch and support the dogs and handlers, we usually start at around 7:00 AM, and will finish for the day when all of the dogs have ran. This is usually around mid-afternoon (think 3:00-ish) but can be much earlier or much later depending on how things go. Please bring your own chair and dress for the weather, and you may find binoculars useful. A porta-potty will be on site.

Lunch is provided each day and is free of charge for our judges, handlers, and volunteers, but we are asking for donations from other guests for the meal.

Shotgun Raffle tickets and Treasure Valley NAVHDA merchandise will also be available for purchase.

Handlers: you should have received your instructions from our Test Secretary, Penny Masar. Please reach out to her if you have questions.

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, and best of luck to everyone testing!

NA Clinic and Veterinary Presentation

We will be holding an NA Clinic on Saturday, March 23rd at 9:00 AM, hosted by George DeCosta at his Gundog Ranch in New Plymouth. This clinic will also include a presentation on field first aid for your dog by Dr. Alicia Ewing DVM. Please bring a chair and materials to take notes with. We will be in his garage with space heaters running, so we will be out of the weather, but be prepared to keep a layer or two on. Please do NOT bring your dogs - this is more of a classroom setting.

Here is the link to the turnoff for the Gundog Ranch. Follow the driveway back and bear to the left, and park in front of the first set of outbuildings that you come to. Please don't park by the cabin.

Annual Chapter Meeting

The annual business meeting for the Treasure Valley NAVHDA chapter will be Saturday, February 3rd, at 11:00 AM at the Plaza Inn Restaurant in Ontario. While the meeting starts at 11:00, we encourage everyone to get there early to have breakfast, not only to socialize with fellow chapter members, but also to give business to the restaurant in appreciation for once again letting us use their space for the meeting.

At this meeting the board members will provide a recap of 2023, including hunt tests, events, financial reports, etc. and will discuss plans for the upcoming year. It is not an election year so the four elected board members will remain the same for 2024, but our Test Secretary and Director of Testing are one-year terms and will be appointed/reappointed at this meeting.

There is also proposed bylaw amendment for membership to vote on - please see the emailed Notice of Annual Chapter Meeting and its attachments for details.

August 12th Training Day

Our last training day of the season will be Saturday, August 12th at 7:00 AM at Jim Mitchell's property in New Plymouth. We will be in the south field right off the main driveway (where our initial training days took place in the spring), and we plan on having the trailer there so you can look for that to know if you're in the right spot.

Click here to see in Google Maps

The focus will be on field work, but we'll have pheasants to work on tracking as well.

Please remember your $5 cash for your 2 homing pigeons per dog. Also make sure you have water for your dog (and you!) to drink. Raffle tickets are still available as well for $50 each.

Again, if you are testing at the end of the month and you don't feel like you and your pup are going to be ready for the test, please reach out and we'll see what we can do to help you out!

July 29th Training Day

Our next training day will be on Saturday, July 29th at 7:00 AM at this location:

Click here to see in Google Maps

We will be doing field work.

We are planning on having another training day on August 19th, and we are still nailing down the location but it will be in the Sand Hollow/New Plymouth area again.

Our last test of the year is coming up, and if you are testing we encourage you to reach out for help if you feel that you and your pup won't be ready for the test - we'll see what we can do for you. We all want to see you and your dog succeed, but with the heat and only a couple training days left our time is very limited.

Feel free to ask any questions that you have and we hope to see you on the 29th!

June Testing Weekend

  • 2600 Roseberry Road Donnelly, ID, 83615 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This test will be held the weekend of June 10-11, 2023, and will be entirely Natural Ability tests (no Utility/Utility Prep). It will be held at the approximate address of 2600 Roseberry Rd, Donnelly, ID 83615. This is private property and we are guests of the landowner.

Tests will begin at 7:00 AM each day and will conclude when all of the dogs have ran for the day and scores are read in the mid-afternoon.

There is NO overnight camping on the testing grounds, so handlers, volunteers, and spectators need to find their own accommodations in the area if they wish to spend the night.

Please bring your own chairs, and binoculars may be useful to watch the dogs from a distance.

We look forward to seeing you there, and best of luck to all the pups and handlers!

May 20th Training Day

  • 3755 High Grove Lane Nampa, ID, 83687 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

One of our members and NAVHDA judges, Bill Cosdon, has graciously offered the use of his property for a training day. Due to the limited space on his property, we will be working on tracking and swimming only (so no field work). And although everyone is welcome to come, we will be giving priority to those that are running in the June tests since they are only a few weeks away.

This training day will be this Saturday, May 20th, at 8:30 AM. The address is 3755 High Grove Lane, Nampa, ID. It's supposed to get hot pretty quickly that day, so we're starting a bit earlier to try and beat the heat.

Please plan on picking up your dog's feces at this training day. We will have some bags on hand but it would be much appreciated if people could bring their own.

Please remember to have your NAVHDA International member number handy if you have one.

Don't forget to bring cash or check if you want to buy a raffle ticket as well - tickets are $50 each, and only 100 tickets will be sold so your chances of winning that shotgun are pretty good! We are also working on some pretty nice runner up prizes as well.

We are planning our next training day to be on June 3rd (time and location are yet to be determined).

If you are running in the June tests and you feel that you and your pup aren't going to be ready after the 2 training days, please reach out and we will see what we can do for you.

As always, feel free to ask any questions that you may have and we're looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

It's recommended that you bring a chair. Binoculars might be useful to watch the dogs.

Tests will be held at George DeCosta’s Gundog Ranch in New Plymouth, ID. Please park along the front of the first set of outbuildings that you come to. Please do not park in front of the cabin.

Training Day

Our training day on April 29th will be at the Mitchell property at 9:00 AM. Since this is the last training day before our May tests, if you are testing and have any concerns or any last-minute things you want to work on, that would be the time to do it.

Here is the link in Google maps: Mitchell's

Please remember to bring your $5 cash for your 2 homing pigeons per dog or your punch card (punch cards are $25 if you still want one - this will be the last chance to buy one, that way everyone has a chance to use theirs up completely by the end of the season as they are non-refundable), and have your NAVHDA International member number handy if you have one.

Don't forget to buy a raffle ticket as well - tickets are $50 each, and only 100 tickets will be sold so your chances of winning that shotgun are pretty good!

As always, feel free to ask any questions that you may have and we're looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!
